Sorting is one of the promising methods of analytical activity of military specialists, it is always used when it is necessary to analyze a large amount of data in such a way that often leads to the discovery of new insights. Sorting is effective when items of information can be broken down into categories or sub-categories for comparison with each other, most often by a computer program such as a spreadsheet. This method is especially effective during the initial stage of data collection and hypothesis generation, but you can also be useful at other times. The work notes that sorting a large amount of data into appropriate categories, which are compared with each other, can provide analysts with information about trends, similarities, differences or irregularities of intelligence information that would otherwise go unnoticed. It is especially useful to sort transaction data, such as intercepting communications or transferring goods or money. To use sorting successfully, follow these guidelines: Review categories of information to determine which category or combination of categories may show trends or irregularities that will help you figure out the problem you are studying. Place the data in a spreadsheet or database using as many fields (columns) as you need to distinguish between data types (dates, times, places, people, activities, amounts, etc.). Specify each fact, each piece of information or hypothesis concerning the problem that is important for your sorting scheme (use paper, board, mobile folders or other means for this). Review the listed facts, information, or hypotheses in a database or spreadsheet to identify key fields that may enable the identification of possible patterns or groupings. These patterns or groupings then illustrate the schema categories and can be listed as header categories. For example, if a terrorist activity check shows that most attacks occur in hotels and restaurants, but the times of attacks vary, "Place" ‒ the main category, while "Date" and "Time" ‒ the secondary categories. Group these items according to the sorting scheme in categories. Further in the work will be considered methods of rating, evaluation and prioritization of elements of intelligence in any list depending on the importance, desirability, priority, cost, probability or any other criterion.
